Reference tips

oref Omni-reference weight

Scale 0 to 1000, default 100. Keep it under 400 for reliable results unless you are also running a high stylize value.

  • 25 to 50: style transfer (photo to anime), let the prompt lead
  • around 100: balanced default
  • 400+: lock a face, logo or outfit at high fidelity

Both stylize and exp compete with the omni-weight, so a high stylize value needs a correspondingly higher weight.

image ref Image weight

Scale 0 to 3, default 1.0 (you work in 0.25 steps). Higher pulls the result closer to the reference; lower lets the text prompt lead.

  • 0.5 and under: subtle nudge, text leads
  • 1.0: balanced default
  • 2 to 3: strong adherence to the reference

Image refs put the image URL in the prompt itself, then control pull with --iw. There is no --oref flag here.

Why two kinds

Omni-reference is not available in v8.1, so image refs (--iw) are the stand-in for putting a subject into a scene. Tag each reference by the kind you actually used so the weight scale stays correct.

Good reference habits

  • Crop tight around the subject. Midjourney reads the whole image, so background elements can bleed into results.
  • The reference URL must stay hosted online. If the link dies, the reference stops working.
  • Oref is V7 only and costs about 2x GPU time. It is not compatible with Vary Region, Pan, Zoom Out, or inpainting.

Backup & transfer

Export copies your whole library as text. Paste on another device and Merge, or use a .json file. Nothing here is ever deleted by importing.
